Write Backwards
Type normally on the left and watch the backwards version build itself on the right. No reverse-typing gymnastics required — you get a clean, copyable result the moment you finish the sentence.
Below the tool there is a short guide to actually writing backwards by hand, because half the people who search for this want the skill rather than the shortcut. Both are covered.

Reverse Typing Examples
What you type on the left, what you read on the right. These are generated by the tool itself, not typed by hand.
| Input | Output | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| write backwards | sdrawkcab etirw | The phrase most people test first. |
| How do you write backwards? | ?sdrawkcab etirw uoy od woH | Question marks lead the output because they ended the input. |
| Practice makes perfect | tcefrep sekam ecitcarP | A longer phrase shows how word boundaries move. |
| Leonardo da Vinci | icniV ad odranoeL | The most famous backwards writer in history, reversed. |
| dad noon level | level noon dad | Three palindromic words — the output is identical to the input. |
| Meet me at 3 | 3 ta em teeM | Numbers reverse in place like any other character. |
| top spot | tops pot | Two words that swap into each other when reversed. |
| stressed | desserts | Reverses to "desserts" — a classic semordnilap. |
Backwards Writing vs Mirror Writing
These are two different skills and two different results, and mixing them up is the most common reason a backwards-writing attempt looks wrong.
Backwards writing keeps letter shapes
Each letter is drawn the way you always draw it; only the order runs right to left. "hello" becomes "olleh", and every letter is still an ordinary letter you could type. That is what this tool produces.
Mirror writing flips the letters too
In true mirror writing each letter is also reflected, so the text reads correctly when held up to a mirror. Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks are the famous example. Our mirror text tool approximates this with reflected Unicode lookalikes.
Why reverse typing is hard by hand
Writing backwards requires you to hold the whole word in memory and emit it in reverse while your motor habits push the other way. Most people can manage short words and lose accuracy past about six letters — which is exactly why a tool helps.
How to practise it properly
Start with three-letter words, write from the right margin leftwards, and check each attempt against the tool. Build to whole words before attempting sentences. Doing it with your non-dominant hand is easier for many people, which is a genuine and well-documented quirk.
Which "Backwards" Do You Want?
The same sentence, written backwards four ways. Most people asking how to write backwards want the first row.
Shared input: Learn to write backwards
| Transformation | Result | Reach for it when |
|---|---|---|
| Backwards writing | sdrawkcab etirw ot nraeL | You want the letters in reverse order, shapes unchanged. |
| Each word backwards | nraeL ot etirw sdrawkcab | You want every word spelled backwards but the sentence order kept. |
| Words in reverse order | backwards write to Learn | You want the last word first and every word readable. |
| Mirror writing | ѕbɿɐwʞɔɐd ɘʇiɿw oʇ ɳɿɐɘ⅃ | You want it to read correctly in a mirror, like da Vinci. |
Things to Watch When Writing Backwards
A few details trip people up when they move from the tool to paper, or from English to another script.
Punctuation moves to the front
A sentence ending in a full stop reverses to one starting with a full stop. If you are producing backwards writing for a puzzle, decide up front whether to strip punctuation first — it often makes the clue cleaner.
Capitals stay capital
Reversal does not touch capitalisation, so a sentence-initial capital ends up at the end of the output. Use the case converter first if you want the reversed version to read as a proper sentence.
Multi-line text collapses in an unexpected way
A newline is a character like any other, so reversing a two-line block puts the second line first but also reverses each line's content. If you only wanted the lines in a different order, use the reverse-lines tool instead.
Right-to-left scripts already run the other way
Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi and Urdu are written right to left, so "backwards" in those scripts means something different again. Reversing the stored characters produces a logical reverse that the browser then re-lays out.
How to Write Backwards
Four steps to produce backwards writing, whether you want the tool to do it or you want to learn to do it yourself.
- 1
Type your text forwards
Write the sentence normally in the input box. Do not try to type it in reverse — that is what the tool is for, and typing in reverse is where mistakes creep in.
- 2
Read the reversed output
The output panel updates on every keystroke. Check the final character of your input has become the first character of the output; that confirms the reversal took.
- 3
Copy or download it
Use the Copy button for a quick paste, or Download to save a .txt file if you are producing a longer piece of backwards writing.
- 4
To write it by hand, work right to left
Start at the right edge of the page and write each letter in its normal shape, moving leftwards. Keeping the letters unmirrored is what separates backwards writing from mirror writing.
Using Backwards Writing in Practice
Because reverse typing produces ordinary characters, it goes anywhere text goes. These are the contexts people actually use it in.
Classrooms and worksheets
Backwards spelling is a standard exercise for phonemic awareness and working memory. Generate a worksheet here, download the .txt file, and paste it straight into your document template.
Social captions and comments
A backwards line in a caption reads as a small puzzle. It stays fully copyable, so anyone who wants to decode it can paste it straight back into this tool.
Notebooks and journals
People who write backwards by hand for privacy get roughly the same protection as a very simple cipher — enough to deter a casual glance, nothing more. Do not rely on it for anything sensitive.
Craft and vinyl cutting
Heat-transfer vinyl has to be cut in reverse. Reverse the string here first, then confirm the letter shapes against the mirror text tool before you commit material to it.
Reasons to Write in Reverse
Memory and handwriting practice
Reversing words forces you to hold and manipulate a sequence in working memory. It is a genuinely useful drill, and short daily attempts beat long occasional ones.
Puzzle and riddle design
Backwards clues are solvable without instructions, which makes them ideal for escape rooms, scavenger hunts and party games where you cannot explain a cipher first.
Semordnilap hunting
Some words spell another word backwards — stressed/desserts, drawer/reward, stop/pots. Paste a word list here to find them in bulk.
Ambidexterity training
Mirror writing with the non-dominant hand comes more naturally to most people than with the dominant one. Reverse-typing the target text first gives you something to check your handwriting against.
