Italic Text Generator

Turn ordinary text into ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ต you can paste anywhere. The slant lives in the characters themselves, so it survives fields that strip every trace of formatting.

One thing to know up front: Unicode defines no italic digits. Numbers pass through upright, which is why "๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ 10" looks half-styled โ€” that is a limitation of the standard, not of this tool.

How Unicode Italics Work

Same mechanism as bold, drawn from a different run โ€” with one significant hole in the standard that this tool routes around.

Letters map to the sans-serif italic run

A becomes ๐˜ˆ (U+1D608) and a becomes ๐˜ข (U+1D622). The run covers all 52 Latin letters with no unassigned slots.

The serif italic run has a famous gap

In the serif italic run, the slot where lowercase h should sit (U+1D455) is unassigned โ€” the character lives at U+210E, the Planck constant, instead. Generators that ignore this render a fallback box for every h. Using the sans-serif run avoids the problem entirely.

There are no italic digits

Unicode never defined italic numerals, so 0-9 are left upright. Any generator that appears to italicise digits is substituting characters from an unrelated block that will not match.

Everything else passes through

Punctuation, symbols, emoji, accented letters and non-Latin scripts are unchanged, so your text stays complete even where the effect cannot apply.

Limits of Unicode Italics

Italics carry the same accessibility and search costs as bold, plus one of their own.

Mixed digits look unfinished

A phrase containing numbers ends up half-italic. If numbers matter to the line, consider a different style or rephrase to avoid them.

Screen readers announce character names

๐˜ˆ is "mathematical sans-serif italic capital A". Assistive technology either reads that aloud or skips it, so italic text can be unusable for some readers.

Search will not match italics

Italic characters are different strings from plain letters, so a search for the plain word finds nothing. Never italicise a keyword you want found.

Some fonts render the slant inconsistently

The mathematical italics come from one specific design. Against a font with a very different italic, the two can look mismatched on the same line.

Platform Support for Italic Text

Rendering is reliable on modern systems. What differs is whether a native italic option exists.

Instagram and TikTok

Neither offers italics natively, which is why Unicode italics are so common in bios. Renders correctly on current apps; keep handles and hashtags plain.

Discord

Discord has native italics with single asterisks or underscores. Use those inside Discord โ€” they stay accessible and searchable. Unicode italics are only worth it for nicknames, where markdown does not apply.

WhatsApp and Telegram

Both support native italics with underscores. Unicode italics are useful in profile names and group titles, where the markdown shortcuts are not available.

LinkedIn and X

Neither has native italics in posts, so Unicode is the only option. LinkedIn search will not match italicised words, so keep your role title upright.

Where Italics Earn Their Place

Titles of works

Books, films and albums are conventionally italicised. In a platform with no formatting, Unicode italics are the only way to follow that convention.

Asides and stage directions

A short italic clause reads as a quieter voice, which is useful for a parenthetical remark in a caption.

Quoting a phrase

Italicising a quoted phrase distinguishes it from your own words without adding quotation marks.

Visual variety in a profile

One italic line among plain ones adds rhythm to a bio without the heaviness of bold.
